Will the American Presidential Election ever lose the Electoral College and go to a Popular Vote?

After Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the Electoral Vote this raised some eyebrows, but as far as I know the subject hasn't been addressed in eight years. Can anyone shed some light on this, thank you.
